The Summer My Life Began follows the story of a girl , Em, who lives in a really strict, formal family. She has her whole life set out for her by her parents, and has always done everything they told her to, even if it wasn't what she wanted to do. That all changes when she gets an invitation by an aunt she hasn’t ever heard of to spend her summer after high school at her aunt’s house. Once there, she pursues her passion of cooking, takes risks, discovers secrets, and starts her own summer romance.
Em, the main character, annoyed me so much for the first part of the book. I found her extremely rude, arrogant, and judgmental- basically just like the rest of her family. Over time, though, she grew to be a much better person. The author did an amazing job showing how she developed as an character over time. Also, I really liked all the characters in the story- like her Aunt Tilly , Dominique (the chef) and the love interest, Cade. All of the characters had a lot of depth to their emotion and were realistic characters.
For the plot, it moved at a good pace and there was a pretty big twist towards the end. The Summer My Life Began was an inspiring, fun summer read. I’d recommend it for any summer day. Overall, I'd give it four out of five stars.
