My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick Book Review

My Life Next Door
A gorgeous debut about family, friendship, first romance, and how to be true to one person you love without betraying another
“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”
The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?
A dreamy summer read, full of characters who stay with you long after the story is over.

I’ve been wanting to read My Life Next Door ever since I heard about it. It was just as good as I thought it would be and told an amazing story!
The main character, Samantha, has led a pretty normal life, controlled by her mom’s upcoming election. One day, she meets  Jace, one of the Garrett’s next door- the family her mom always told her to stay away from. When she and Jace start dating, she finds out a lot more about the family next door.
The characters were a huge part in what made this story great. Jace was a really awesome, unique love interest. He was so strong and reliable. Samantha was also really great. She was kind and caring. I loved the Garrett family. All of the siblings in the family were so different and awesome. I especially liked one of the younger siblings, George, who had an obsession with the Discovery Channel. He was so cute! For Samantha’s mom, throughout the story her and Samantha have their difficulties, but end up trying to patch them up a lot, over time.
The plot was also pretty amazing. There was plenty of humor mixed in and a ton of different events occurring over the summer. Jace is working on fixing up a car throughout the story, and him and Samantha go a lot of different places together. This book was more steamy than I thought it would be, but overall, Samantha and Jace’s relationship was really sweet. There was a big event that happened at the end that I didn’t think the response to was realistic. That was the only thing I didn’t really enjoy.
This book helps show you an unforgettable, amazing summer! I’d give it 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers. I will definitely be reading any other books Huntley Fitzpatrick writes in the future.

Teaser:

“Did you know that in space it's very, very cold? And there's no oxygen? And if an astronaut fell out of a shuttle without his suit he'd die right away?"

I'm a fast learner. "But that would never happen. Because astronauts are really, really careul."

George gives me a smile, the same dazzling sweet smile as his big brother, although at this point, with green teeth. "I might marry you," he allows. "Do you want a big family?”

  2. I read this book as well, but unlike everybody else, I didn't enjoy it that much, haha.

I sort of thought Samantha was annoying and Jase was too perfect. But there was good humor and the romance was okay. Good review!
