I really like historical fiction, so I was excited to read The Promise by D.D Chant. It turned out to be a really good read :)
The Promise follows the story of two people, Adele and Rafe, who were betrothed to each other at a young age. Adele had been kept hidden away her whole life and when she turns eighteen, Rafe comes to get her. He fails to mention that he’s her fiancé and, instead lets her think that he's Finan, one of his good friends.
I loved the way the story was told and the characters were so unique! Adele was a nice, good person and I really liked Rafe. The romance between them was also great in the way it developed over time and there was definitely no insta-love involved .
Also, the side characters, especially Finan (who Rafe was pretending to be), were really funny and a great part of the story. The book was a bit slow at times, but, overall, was a really good read. I’m excited to see what the author comes out with in the future and I’d give The Promise four out of five flowers.
