Tempest Rising by Tracey Deebs Book Review and Giveaway

Tempest Rising (Tempest, #1)
Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her-and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

I’m a huge fan of mermaid books, and I was hoping to love Tempest Rising. It ended up surpassing my expectations and it’s one of my new favorites! :)

Tempest Rising follows a girl, Tempest, who is battling her mermaid heritage. She's trying not to become the same person as her mother, who walked out on their family years before, because of her own mermaid heritage. As Tempest's need to become mermaid grows, and her relationship with her boyfriend, Mark, suffers, a new guy shows up who may be able to give her answers.

Tempest was an awesome character. She was a strong character, but also a friendly one. She loved surfing and her boyfriend, Mark, at the beginning of the book. Even thought Mark was a pretty intense person, I still really liked him and how much he cared about Tempest. I was rooting for their relationship the whole time :) The new guy who showed up, Kona, was amazing too. This is one of the few love triangles I’m torn about who I liked better. Kona knew a lot about Tempest’s past, and they definitely had a strong connection with each other. Tempest’s family (especially her dad) were all great people and every character had such depth. I wish I knew some of these people in real life ;)

Also, I loved the mermaid aspect of the book. There was so much to it, with an ongoing war going on under the sea and a battle between good and evil. The plot never slowed down, and there was always some kind of drama in the plot that kept you reading. The flashbacks that Tempest had to her past also were heartbreaking, I also loved how the story unfolded as you read. You found out more and more about Tempest’s past and the mermaid world as you read on.

I loved Tempest Rising, and I’m looking forward to reading Tempest Unleashed. Tempest Rising is full of amazing characters and a great world under the sea. I’d give it 5 out of 5 flowers. I’m also giving away a copy of the book (US/CA) and I included some of my favorite quotes below :)

*Thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing for sending me a copy for review!

  1. I'm not a huge fan of love triangle, but I can appreciate them if the author made it well-written. I believe that's the case with this story, so I really want to read it. I love mermaids :) Wonderful review!

  2. I read this story in the Spring, I think, and I LOVED it!! I was shocked that some of the reviews weren't as positive. Some complained about the storyline being weak, they expected more from the ocean world, but I thought it was pitch perfect for what it was intending to do. Haven't gotten to the second one yet, but I can't wait to read it:)

  4. I haven't read a mermaid book so I am very excited about this one! It sounds very intriguing and the main character sounds great too. The one thing I am very curious about is the love triangle.....you really liked it, which is making me crazy to know how it turns out! I never thought I'd say that about a love triangle...but there you go! LOL ;p Glad you enjoyed this Montana! :D

    Brilliant Review!
