When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?
Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.
Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.
Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.
Altered was such a thrilling book from the very beginning to the end. I expected it to be mainly focused on the romance, and although that was a part of the story, a bunch of the plot was focused on the action and secrets behind the boys in the laboratory. It played out just like a movie!
I thought was by far the best thing in the whole book. I don’t want to get too spoilery, but it was almost impossible for me to guess what was going to happen next and what exactly was going on at different times throughout the entire book. The characters also added a lot of depth to the story. As more is revealed about their past, I found all the boys to be so different and unique.
Anna was a good character, but at first I thought her fascination with Sam was kind of weird. Sam isn’t the type of love interest that I usually like, but strangely enough I found liking him a lot more by the time the book ended. He was strong, and the guy on the cover is definitely good-looking ;) He was a pretty reserved person, though, and didn’t seem to want anyone besides the other boy’s in.
The ending and writing style were both amazing! I thought the way the writing drew me in was captivating and I loved that aspect. Also, the ending left me super excited for the sequel to Altered whenever that comes out. Altered is such an action packed thrill ride and I’d definitely recommend it to any YA lover. It’s a great read, that I would give 4 out of 5 flowers.
