Hooked by Liz Fichera Book Review

Hooked
Get hooked on a girl named Fred...
HE said: Fred Oday is a girl? Why is a girl taking my best friends spot on the boy's varsity golf team?
SHE said: Can I seriously do this? Can I join the boys' team? Everyone will hate me - especially Ryan Berenger.
HE said: Coach expects me to partner with Fred on the green? That is crazy bad. Fred's got to go - especially now that I can't get her out of my head. So not happening.
SHE said: Ryan can be nice, when he's not being a jerk. Like the time he carried my golf bag. But the girl from the rez and the spoiled rich boy from the suburbs? So not happening.
But there's no denying that things are happening as the girl with the killer swing takes on the boy with the killer smile...

I’ve never seen West Side Story, but I was still really interested in Hooked, which was called a modern day version. Hooked really surprised me and I ended up greatly enjoying it!

I didn’t realize at first that the main character, a girl named Fred, was Native American. Her background and the fact that she lived on a reservation added quite a bit of depth to the book. The way certain kids treated her at school was terrible, I felt so bad for all she went through! The other main character, Ryan, I didn’t like at first- at all. He had terrible friends and always did what they wanted, despite it being the wrong thing. Towards the end, though, the qualities in him that I disliked the most didn’t seem to be as strong. Their relationship was interesting and it had many different parts throughout the story where things about it changed.

Ryan’s friend, Seth, and girlfriend were almost literally psychotic. There were such evil people! Also, Hooked is told in alternating point of views between Ryan and Fred, who both have dysfunctional families. Some major events occurred throughout the book, especially towards the end, that really surprised me. I did not see them coming- at all. I thought the plot got a tiny bit slow in the middle, but it’s pace quickly picked back up.

Hooked is a great book definitely worth checking out. I’d give it 4 out of 5 flowers :)

*Thanks so much to Harlequin Teen for sending me a copy of Hooked to read and review! :)

  1. I haven't seen West Side Story either. My friend or co-blogger reviewed Hooked few days ago and she gave it 4 stars. I added it to my list but I think that after reading your review I should read it sooner. Sounds like an interesting read :) Great review :)
