Just One Day by Gayle Foreman Book Review

A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay
Just One Day (Just One Day, #1)
When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until th
e following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

Just One Day
is the first in a sweepingly romantic duet of novels. Willem’s story—Just One Year—is coming soon!
Just One Day was one of the most beautiful stories I’ve read in a while. The writing was so phenomenal and I loved the story of self-growth.

Just One Day follows a girl, Allyson, after she makes a split second decision to go to Paris, with a cute Dutch guy. What she doesn’t realize that her entire year after that will be so affected by those actions she takes.

Allyson was such an amazing character. She had just graduated high school and struggled with meeting her mom’s expectations and holding on to her best friend of forever. I felt like I could see into Alyson’s heart, and how she always tried to be the best she could. I saw a little of myself in her, and I’m guessing most people will be able to relate to what she goes through ;) She was such an honest and beautiful person. Willem was also pretty incredible. I loved the perspective he put on everything and how he saw the way people should live.

The plot show Allyson’s journey and how her life is after being separated from Willem after just one day spent together. There’s usually only one chapter or two for every month in the next year. The way Alyson comes to realize how to take hold of her own life was an incredible journey to experience and I felt I was there with her. The ending was also great, and I am so excited for the sequel, which will show Willem’s perspective of things. There’s not too long to wait for it! The romance is a part of Just One Day for sure, but there’s so many more overlying themes that exist, especially the focus on self-discovery.

This book made me laugh and cry, and I was a very emotional person when reading this. The only thing I didn’t absolutely love about this story were some things that went against my personal morals. Overall, this book is incredible and I can’t recommend it enough. Most of this review is gushing, but I’d give Just One Day 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers :)

  4. I hear the second is going to be out of Willem's point of view, just like Forman's "If I Stay" books.
