Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers Book Review

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?
Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If s
he chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

It took me a while to read it, but I’m so glad I finally picked up Grave Mercy. I’ve previously heard so many amazing things about it from other bloggers, and I also had a copy of it that I had bought last year. It was an awesome book and I fell in love with the historical setting that it took place in.

Ismae has had a really tough life, so when she is taken to a convent for the “daughters of death”, it saves her from a living a terrible life. From then on, she is both extremely loyal and eager to serve the convent.

Ismae was an admirable character. She had dealt with so much, but she was still so strong. I didn’t initially think I would like her, considering the things that she does, but I found myself understanding her and hoping she would find her way in life. I also liked how Ismae wasn’t too stubborn and was so open to considering every side of various circumstances. At the same time, Duvall and her made an awesome pair.

Duvall was a great guy. I didn't expect to like him as much as I did, but Ismae and him really did make the perfect match. Some of the secondary characters were awesome, as well. I’m so excited to read the books told from Ismae’s two friends, Sybella and Annith, povs. I really liked getting a glimpse into what they are like during Grave Mercy. I also thought both of Duvall’s friends were amazing characters. Beast made me laugh and I loved his carefree personality. His other friend also definitely grew on me over the course of the story.

I thought the ending was perfect for the book and I’m looking forward to seeing how the loose ends will be tied up in Dark Triumph.  Although I didn’t enjoy the inclusion of certain things, based on personal preference, Grave Mercy was still great. I’d give Grave Mercy 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers. I’m so excited to read Dark Triumph!

  5. I need to read this one! It's so intimidating because it's such a large book, so I end up passing on it. But, like you said, everyone has such good things to say about it. I'm glad it sets up nicely for the sequel -- which has an equally gorgeous cover :)

  6. I loved this book when I read it last year, Ismae was such a great, strong character and I loved her snark. And Duvall, I loved them together, it was a great pairing and really made things interesting. I also liked that it wasn't an automatic romance, it was very slow going and that made me love them all the more. I'm excited for Dark Triumph to see what Sybella's story will be like.
