The Elite by Kiera Cass Book Review

The Elite (The Selection, #2)Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea.
America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.
Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.
I absolutely loved The Selection (and Maxon ;), so I was very excited to dig into The Elite. It was awesome, but I felt the romance was somewhat lacking and the book just wasn’t as great as The Selection.

First off, America was likable enough to me in the first book. Unfortunately, I felt she made some very rash, irrational decisions in this one. Also, some of her emotions and thoughts definitely came across as petty. I felt she changed, but not in a good way.

I didn’t like Aspen at all in The Selection. However, he definitely seemed a lot better in The Elite. On the other hand, I didn't like Maxon as much. I felt like his and America’s romance got very confusing and it moved super fast. The competition was still as entertaining as always, though.

The plot moved even faster then The Selection, with some new threats coming towards the capital city, and therefore the selection. There were also several different things that I never envisioned would occur.

Also, although Maxon did some things that really aggravated me, I’m still Team Maxon. However, Aspen was a great character. America ending up making a decision about which guy she preferred at the very end.

The Elite was a great sequel, although I felt it didn’t quite live up to The Selection. I’d give it 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers.

  2. I haven't read the first book in this series so I can't say much about this. I'm so happy you liked it overall. To bad that the romance is lacking! :) Great review :)

  3. I'm starting the Elite when I get home tonight and I'm pretty nervous. I've had some reservations because like you, I'm not a huge fan of Aspen and as always with the second book formula, things are going to happen that I'm not going to like.

I'm glad you enjoyed some aspects of the story and I can't wait to dive in!

  4. I agree with you on America, she definitely did some frustrating things in this one. And as much as I'm Team Maxon, he did as well, though I had a hard time blaming him given America's waffling between the two boys. He never really knew how she felt about him, and he has a decision to make, so as much as I would have loved him to wait her out, he did need to play the game a bit! Glad you guys enjoyed this one overall, I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book! Lovely review:)

  5. Okay, I'm really holding my breath because I didn't like the Selection but it was so addicting so I really want to read this one. However, I'm so anti-Aspen that I hope nothing happens with him! Great review!

  6. I have to admit that I can be quite quick to lose respect for characters when they make silly decisions all the time. It's a shame about America, but I'm glad to hear she at least makes a decision about which guy she prefers. That's a relief! I'm not a fan of love triangles, so the sooner it's resolved, the better. Great review!

  7. I really liked The Selection so I'm really excited for this one but sadly everyone is saying that it wasn't that good. It seems as strong as America was in the first book which is upsetting.

    thanks for the great review!

  12. I still can't wait to read this one!! Despite some issues. I read a peek or something that I saw on Goodreads and I was super surprised how fast America and Maxon were moving in their relationship. Too fast. I really want to get it and read though. *crosses fingers* I still want it to be good, even if not up to par with The Selection. Thanks for the review!

  13. I just finished reading The Elite and I absolutely love it. There was so much drama and was a rollercoaster ride of America's emotions which made me really want to kill her -_- :)) and I really got to know America, Maxon, Aspen more! I definitely have some new found respect for Aspen but still Team Maxon all the way! Btw, great review!
