Golden by Jessi Kirby Book Review

GoldenSeventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.

Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.
I really enjoyed both of Jessi Kirby’s previous novels, so I was so happy to get the chance to read Golden. It told two amazing intertwined stories and it's one of my new favorite contemporaries!

The main character, Parker, is one that has pretty much played it safe throughout all of high school. I liked her a lot, and I love when I’m able to relate to a main character really easily. In Golden, Parker ends up discovering the journal of one of the people in a tragic accident from the past, she finds out both that the tragedy wasn’t what it was thought to be and herself along the way.

I loved both the romance and how much Parker grew over the course of the story. Jessi Kirby always manages to infuse just the right amount of romance, so it doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the story. The relationship between her and Trevor was so awesome, too. He was such a great guy, and helped Parker out so much. On the other hand, her best friend Kat was such a great foil to her. She was the opposite of Parker, but they had such a great friendship.

The plot was awesome, especially with the mystery element it involved. The details of the tragic event were led up to with quite a bit of suspense. I was constantly trying to piece together what really happened. When it was finally revealed, I was really surprised, but I also found the outcome to be realistic. All the excerpts from the journal are in the book, so it’s as if you’re understanding them at the same time Parker is. The events that led up the ending were all great.

Golden by Jessi Kirby is definitely my favorite book by her. Both the plot and the characters were incredible and it’s an amazing contemporary. I’m so excited to see what she writes next! I’d give Golden 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers.

  1. Great Review! It's always nice when a author can pull of a romance that doesn't take center place. This looks awesome, thanks for sharing :)

  9. I absolutely loved this book, I've never read anything by Kirby before but this book makes me want to read her other books. Everything about this was so adorable and I loved that it wasn't really about Parker's love life, but about life and the choices we make as a whole. Such an amazing story!
