How I Lost You by Janet Gurtler Book Review

How I Lost YouThere are a few things Grace Anderson knows for sure. One is that nothing will ever come between her and her best friend, Kya Kessler. They have a pact. Buds Before Studs. Sisters Before Misters. But in the summer before senior year, life throws out challenges they never expected. And suddenly the person who's always been there starts to need the favor returned. Grace and Kya are forced to question how much a best friend can forgive. And the answer is not what they expected.

How I Lost You was the first book I've read by Janet Gurtler and I'm now really looking forward to reading her other books :) How I Lost You was a great contemporary, with an awesome plot.

The book follows two best friends, Kya and Grace. They have had such a strong friendship for years, until it begins to fall apart. Grace was a great friend to Kya. She was really likable and a loyal person. However, I couldn't stand Kya. While Grace was such a great friend, Kya was a terrible one. She took advantage of Grace and even though something horrible had happened to her in the past, I still didn't think that excused her actions.

For the plot itself, it did an amazing job of depicting a friendship that grew apart. There were some things the characters did that I didn't like, but everyone does make mistakes. There were some serious issues discussed, but they were all handled very well.

Also, the romance between Grace and Levi was super sweet. Levi was a great guy and although there wasn't anything about his and Grace's relationship that wowed me, it was still cute.

Overall, How I Lost You is a fantastic contemporary! Despite not liking Kya, I loved the plot and the friendship it depicted. I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers.

  1. Everyone seems to be loving Janet Gutler and her stories. I haven't read any of them but I think I have one somewhere. I should dig it out and see what all the hype is about. I'm glad you enjoyed this somewhat and I hope her other books have some characters that you like better than Kya.

  2. I'm 3/4 of the way through this book at the moment and you pretty much just summed up my thoughts! I agree with you: Grace is such a sweet and loyal character, but KYA. UGHHHH. She's so unpolite and just not well-mannered, I don't care that she went through all that. :/ And I love Levi, too! Such a sweet romance. Lovely review, dear!

  3. I didn't really think a lot about it when I first heard it on goodreads, but I actually like that it's more about friendship than romance. I think I'm going to like Grace. Great review :)
