Nantucket Blue by Leila Howland Book Review

Nantucket Blue
For Cricket Thompson, a summer like this one will change everything. A summer spent on Nantucket with her best friend, Jules Clayton, and the indomitable Clayton family. A summer when she’ll make the almost unattainable Jay Logan hers. A summer to surpass all dreams.

Some of this turns out to be true. Some of it doesn’t.

When Jules and her family suffer a devastating tragedy that forces the girls apart, Jules becomes a stranger whom Cricket wonders whether she ever really knew. And instead of lying on the beach working on her caramel-colored tan, Cricket is making beds and cleaning bathrooms to support herself in paradise for the summer.

But it’s the things Cricket hadn’t counted on--most of all, falling hard for someone who should be completely off-limits--that turn her dreams into an exhilarating, bittersweet reality.

A beautiful future is within her grasp, and Cricket must find the grace to embrace it. If she does, her life could be the perfect shade of Nantucket blue.
Nantucket Blue sounded like an absolutely amazing contemporary, so I was very excited to read it. Although it wasn’t everything I hoped it would be, it was still a great book!

Cricket is planning to spend the summer in Nantucket with her best friend. When a tragedy occurs and those plans change, she goes there by herself anyways and gets a job. Her friend becomes so cold to her, but Cricket soon finds romance with another character ;)

I liked Cricket as a character, and I also found her to be a great friend with how she tried to help Jules. Jules ended up being such a mean person, and I didn’t like her at all. The thing that happened to her was terrible, but I still didn’t think that it made her actions okay in any way.

The romance was pretty steamy, especially for young adult. The love interest was a nice guy, but the overall romance was pretty weird to me. I just never fully connected with it and there wasn’t very much build up to the relationship the characters had. There also wasn’t too much of a plot, but that didn’t stop it being from a super quick read.

The book ended on a good note, but I still wasn’t completely satisfied with the way everything occurred. It also left a few things open ended. I’d give Nantucket Blue 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers.

*Thank you to Disney Hyperion for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review! :)

  2. Hmhh.. I have this on GR tbr pile. I like that there was a steamy romance and as Tanja said - seems like a great summer read. I'm sad you didn't connect with the love interest that mmuch. It seems like a mindless read in the sense that you mention not having much of a plot. It's great for a beach read in my opinion. Thanks for sharing:-)

  3. I have this on my shelf! I haven't read it yet though and started to, but stopped. I don't know how I'll feel about the weird romance, but I hope this book is good. A bit disappointing that it didn't get a high rating from you, but I'm glad you enjoyed it overall!

  5. I've heard Jules is an absolutely miserable excuse for a human being, and I have no doubt that I will intensely dislike her when I give this book a try! It's a shame you couldn't fully connect with the romance, but it seems like you were able to enjoy this book overall:) I'm really looking forward to it, thanks for the lovely review!

  7. I know what you mean about how it isn't everything we expected. I was so pumped up with the book because it sounded interesting and it's got a pretty cover but I didn't like it all that much. The romance was pretty weird and I didn't really get much of a climax with this book. Great review!

    1. The cover is super cute, but the romance just wasn't for me. I agree with you about there not really being too much of a climax. Thank you! :)
