Playing Hooky by Rita Webb Blog Tour Stop

Playing Hooky (Paranormal Investigations, #1) Valentine’s Day.
And my 21st birthday.
Whoop-de-doo.
Just another college day full of classes and more homework than is humanly possible.
…until Jason, my best-friend-since-kindergarten, shows up to take me out for the day.
Like old times: the two of us on a wacky adventure, playing hooky from real life. With his lopsided grin and tickets to a circus full of misfits and monsters, he introduces me to a whole new world—one full of magic and mystery—and turns my reality upside down.
Except nothing goes as planned, and we end up running through the city to find a missing siren before someone brews a love potion with her blood.
Sirens and love potions, witches and elves, and Valentine kisses. Nothing will be the same for me again

I was excited to read Playing Hooky because the storyline sounded so fun and I’m starting to really enjoy the new adult genre. It was a great novella, and a super fast read.

Even though it’s only a 100 pages or so, the character development was still really well written and fleshed out. I think the use of both character’s povs really helped with that. Emma was a likable character and Jason was great as well. He had his own, very different thoughts regarding some things going on in his world.

The adventure was a lot of fun, especially the ending. I guessed what was going to happen many chapters before the particular event actually did occur, but I still liked reading about what happened once it actually did. There were snippets of humor, especially with all the magical creatures, in the book and one scene involving pink hair was especially funny ;)

The ending also leaves a lot of room for a continuation. I especially want to find out what Jason is and where Emma’s and his relationship will go. Playing Hooky is a great start to a new series. I’d give it 4 out of 5 flowers.

  2. Hmmm. You say this is a start to a new series, but are they all going to be novellas? Or is this a kind of prequel and the rest will be full length novels? I'm impressed the characterization is so well done in so few pages, that's hard to do I think and in part why I don't often read novellas unless they're related to an already-existing series. You have me curious about this one though, really fantastic review!

There's definitely more to come for Emma & Jason, plus Angelina will get a chance to tell her side of the story.
