School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins Book Review

School Spirits (School Spirits, #1)Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

I read and really enjoyed Hex Hall, so I was really excited to read the spin off series. I loved School Spirits and I'm definitely a fan of Rachel Hawkins now. Her books are just always so fun and enjoyable. They also have the perfect amount of romance thrown in ;)

Izzy is the protagonist and is pretty much a girl taking on different monsters. She was such an awesome heroine. She has to go to a regular high school after being home schooled all her life, so she has to deal with that the best she’s able to. Izzy made me laugh out loud so much, and I wish I could have her as a friend. She’s always doing the best she can to navigate her life. Her sister’s disappearance and one of her friends both added some super interesting things to the plot.

The storyline for this book involved Izzy investigating an extremely angry ghost haunting the high school. That aspect was super interesting and I always love action-packed books, with an obvious antagonist. Dex, one of Izzy’s friends had a mystery surrounding him, too. He was an awesome character and books that have both a mystery and action are a double win for me, lol ;)

After reading School Spirits, I really want to go back and read the entire Hex Hall trilogy to have something to read over the long wait to the next book. School Spirits is an amazing start to a new spin-off series. I’d give it 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers.

*Thank you so much to Disney Hyperion for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review! :)

  2. I heard from Hawkins on twitter that there's no sequel to School Spirits as she has another project she's working on *sad face* I'm glad you loved this one, while I missed Sophie's kickass and humour, the MC was fairly likeable here.

    Lovely review! <33

  5. I loved Hex Hall and Hawkins's writing style so I was excited for one. Though this one has a different setting and had a closer-to-normal feel, her writing was still amazing. Glad you enjoyed this one, too.

  8. I can't wait to get my hands on this book! I don't have it yet but I must have it soon! Hex Hall was one of my favorite series as it's one of the few YA series that makes me really enjoy myself. I often find myself laughing at something Sophie (or Archer said). I can't wait to see what happens with Izzy! Great review :)

  9. I can't wait to start this one, I am glad it lives up to the style of Hex Hall. I need to finish the last book in the Hex Hall series before I can justify buying this one :)

  10. I read books 1 and 2 of Hex Hall Series, but haven't picked up book #3 because I don't want it all to end. You say School Spirits is a spin off of the series. Can you explain how they are related?

    1. The main character of School Spirits is cousins with Sophie from Hex Hall. It's the same world and old characters make new appearances :)

  11. I just finished reading Spell Bound last night, so I am super excited to read School Spirits. I loved the Hex Hall series - just the right about of humor and romance in it, and I was satisfied with the ending. I really enjoyed your review and it made me want to pick up her new series immediately!! I am really afraid of reading it before the whole series is released though because the cliffhangers in the HH series were killer!

  12. Im sad that there's not going to be a series on school spirit. I want to know what happens to her sister, and the relationships, and the secret with the dude in the mirror.
