Riptide by Lindsey Scheibe Book Review

RiptideFor Grace Parker, surfing is all about the ride and the moment. Everything else disappears. She can forget that her best friend, Ford Watson, has a crush on her that she can’t reciprocate. She can forget how badly she wants to get a surf scholarship to UC San Diego. She can forget the pressure of her parents’ impossibly high expectations. When Ford enters Grace into a surf competition—the only way she can impress the UCSD surfing scouts—she has one summer to train and prepare. Will she gain everything she’s ever wanted or lose the only things that ever mattered?

I was so excited going into Riptide because I love novels that involve surfing. Riptide turned out to be a lot different than I expected and although it had a lot of potential, I feel that it fell flat.

Riptide centers around Grace, and her best friend Ford. Grace’s dream is surfing, although she knows her parents will never be okay with that. At the same time, both main characters really like each other, although both characters end up sending each other mixed signals.

I liked both Grace and Ford. I thought they made a super cute pair of best friends. However, I didn’t like the way Grace dealt with certain things and I wished she had confided in Ford more. At the same time, around halfway through the book, Ford starts dating another female character to get over Grace. The girl he dated really annoyed me and I was so frustrated with Ford using her the way he did.

I thought this novel would mainly focus on surfing, but it ending up focusing a lot on a much darker theme. The description mentions Grace not being able to live up to her parent’s pressures, but it’s even more than that. Her dad would physically abuse Grace at times. Grace has to deal with never knowing when he will explode. Her dad was such a terrible person, but at the same time, I couldn’t stand her mom either. Her mom ignored and tried to block out what was happening to her own daughter. She didn’t want anyone to judge her if she decided to leave her husband. Both parents were terrible.

The last chapter before the epilogue was somewhat unrealistic to me. I wish the way certain things happened had been clarified more and I don’t think some things that happened would have been possible. Although the epilogue didn’t involve a perfect ending, it still summed things up really well. I’d give Riptide 3 out of 5 flowers.

  1. Nice review! I think I'll give this one a pass though as it doesn't sound all that special. Is surfing fun?

  2. I've been wanting to read this book for quite some time, but I'll think I'll check it out later though, since you say it was flat. And I've read way too many flat book lately. Nice review, though!

  5. That's really too bad. I've heard not so great reviews, but hoping they were wrong. However, I trust you so now I definitely know it is. I hate the fact that he uses another girl to get over Grace because that's definitely a jerk attitude. And boo on unrealistic epilogues or anything unrealistic in a book!

  6. Great review! I do have to say I really disliked Riptide xD It was a DNF for me. The characters' attitudes were really frustrating. Especially how in the beginning the main character treats the guy as sort of replaceable. Too bad it couldn't have been what you wanted out of it!
