With power comes enemies. Lots of them.Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies. He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait. Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too. With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…
I loved the first two books in the Elemental series and I’ve always been curious about Hunter, so I was very excited to dive into Spirit. I grew to love Hunter and better understand the turmoil that constantly goes through his head.
Hunter is a much more complex character than I ever realized. He’s so torn between two sides: to work with the Merricks or to be a guide, as he was destined to. He was such an easy character to emphasize with and his home life was pretty bad. Michael helps and befriends Hunter in Spirit, which was cool to see. Michael is my second favorite character (after Gabriel ;), so it was great to see more of him.
There were so many new developments with Hunter’s past and the dangerous situation from the last book quickly picking up pace. The one thing I didn’t like very much, though, was the love interest for Hunter. She was definitely cold and I didn't like how she flirted with every guy she saw. My favorite part of the relationship, although I wish it wasn't, was when when Hunter called her out for everything she did. Towards the end, though, I feel she really redeemed herself and made herself easier to identify with.
The ending was perfect for the book and although some things were heartbreaking, I really loved how much Hunter grew as a character over the course of the book. I’d give Spirit 4 out of 5 flowers.
I'm giving away a brand new, unread copy of the first book in the series, Storm. This giveaway is US only, due to shipping costs. My June New Release Giveaway is international, though! :)
