Authors Are Rockstars: Kathleen Peacock

Authors Are Rockstars

I was blown away when I read Hemlock last year. I went into it expecting another werewolf story, but it turned out to be so much more. I completely admire how Kathleen Peacock took a popular topic and made into something so thrilling and unique! Her take on werewolves and how the world would be if they existed is so realistic. It definitely doesn’t hurt that all the werewolves involved in the plot are gorgeous ;) I fell in love with the story itself and the characters made it even better. Kathleen Peacock is definitely a rockstar, and I hope I’ll get the chance to meet her one day! :)

What inspired you to write Hemlock?

I was actually inspired by the song “It’s Been Awhile” by Staind. I was listening to it while walking to work and this scene just popped into my head. A girl, a werewolf, and a hunter—best friends—being torn apart by secrets in a hospital room. That scene didn’t make it into any of the drafts, but everything—the characters, the world building, the plot—grew out of it.

Was it harder for you to write Hemlock or Thornhill?

I think Thornhill was more difficult because, unlike Hemlock, it wasn’t written in a vacuum.  People were reading—and liking—the first book and I kept thinking, “I hope I don’t let them down.” I also find action scenes hard to write and there are a lot more of them in Thornhill.

What’s your writing process like?

It varies. I usually write outlines, but I don’t always stick to them. When I get stuck, I like to scribble down thoughts on whiteboards or take a blank notebook to a coffee shop or restaurant. Mostly, to be honest, I just make up my process as I go along.

Do you prefer the US or UK cover of Hemlock?

I like them both for different reasons. I feel like the UK cover perfectly captures the suspense element of the story while the US cover does an amazing job at conveying the emotional undertones of the book. I’m incredibly lucky to have had two incredibly talented cover designers.

What are you currently working on writing?

I’m currently working on the third (and final) Hemlock book.

Did you always know you wanted to become a writer? What/who made you want to become one?

I’ve wanted to be a writer off and on since I was about four.  I’m not entirely sure how it happened. I have this very clear memory of my kindergarten teacher asking what I wanted to be when I grew up and me replying that I wanted to write and illustrate books.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?

Read as much and as widely as you can.

What are your favorite books and authors?

My favorite author is Douglas Adams.  My favorite books change at least three times on any given day, but today they are: Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman, The Princess Bride by William Goldman,  The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and Incarnate by Jodi Meadows.

Quick Questions:

E-book or Physical? About 50/50. I love the experience of shopping in physical bookstores and feel it’s incredibly important to support them, but I also buy a lot of eBooks because I like the ability to carry dozens of books on my phone and e-reader.

Hardcover or Paperback? Paperback. Easier to slip into a purse or knapsack.

Werewolves or vampires ;) ? Werewolves to write and vampires to read.

Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream? Ice Cream

Contemporary or Paranormal? I think the best paranormal stories are the ones which have something to say about contemporary life or the human condition, so both

A Canadian who is likely to perish in the first wave of the zombie apocalypse, Kathleen spent her teen years crushing on authors and writing short stories about vampires. She put her writing dreams on hold while attending art school, but tripped over them when office life left her feeling restless.
Thornhill, the second novel in the Hemlock trilogy, will be released on September 10th, 2013. Find Kathleen on: Twitter l Goodreads l Facebook l Website

  34. I love the song It's Been Awhile, and now I'm probably going to hear it in my head when I finally get the chance to read Hemlock. It's been on my list for a long time, the premise really sounds unique to me and that's hard to find nowadays. Also, I think it's awesome that you've known since you were 4 (and remember telling your teacher) that you have wanted to be an author. I wish I was good at writing because I have great ideas, but I have always had problems with writing - even in my own journal in elementary school! Anyway, I am super excited to read Hemlock and then Thornhill, and then whatever book #3 will be named :)
