Deception by C.J Redwine Book Review

Deception (Defiance, #2) Baalboden has been ravaged. The brutal Commander's whereabouts are unknown. And Rachel, grief stricken over her father's death, needs Logan more than ever. With their ragged group of survivors struggling to forge a future, it's up to Logan to become the leader they need—with Rachel by his side. Under constant threat from rival Carrington's army, who is after the device that controls the Cursed One, the group decides to abandon the ruins of their home and take their chances in the Wasteland.

But soon their problems intensify te
nfold: someone—possibly inside their ranks—is sabotaging the survivors, picking them off one by one. The chaos and uncertainty of each day puts unbearable strain on Rachel and Logan, and it isn't long before they feel their love splintering. Even worse, as it becomes clear that the Commander will stop at nothing to destroy them, the band of survivors begins to question whether the price of freedom may be too great—and whether, hunted by their enemies and the murderous traitor in their midst, they can make it out of the Wasteland alive.
In this daring sequel to Defiance, with the world they once loved forever destroyed, Rachel and Logan must decide between a life on the run and standing their ground to fight.
Defiance was such an action-packed, amazing debut. It was one of my favorites last year, so I was so excited to read Deception. While Deception was still full of action and had a bunch of shocking twists and turns, I felt like it wasn't quite as good as the first book.

The characters had gone through so much from the first book. I liked Logan just as much as ever and I really admired how much he had grown into his role as leader. There were so many shocking revelations surrounding him, but he stayed strong through everything. Rachel was such a different character, though.

Rachel spent about 90% of the book building an emotionless wall around her because of how she felt regarding some of her actions in the last book. I understood why she did it, but it made it so hard to identify with her. Everyone around her was struggling, and I wanted her to show more care and realize she wasn't the only one hurting.

The romance was pretty insignificant in this book, but I didn't mind as the action was a big part of the plot. There was some shocking deaths and terrible things that happened, so it was pretty much impossible to guess what would happen next.

The villain in Deception was one of the most awful I've read about in a while. The motivations for what he did were awful and he showed no humanness at all. At the same time, both Logan and Rachel are being pursued by the Commander.

Deception is an action-packed, surprising sequel. Although I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book, I'd definitely still recommend this series! I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers :)

  1. Ahh I'm really happy you enjoyed this one, even if you didn't love it as much as Defiance. I can definitely see why you wouldn't be able to connect with Rachel because of her constant walls, because I remember not being able to get into some of Defiance because Rachel was acting really odd. Logan still sounds like the same guy I loved though so that's good. I should probably pick this up soon and see for myself lol!

    Fantastic review, Montana! <33

  2. I like the action-packed aspect :) I already had troubles with Rachel, so I wasn't expecting that to change. I do like Logan a lot, so I'm happy he is the same. I'm sorry that it wasn't as good as Defiance.

  3. I'm glad that you enjoyed Deception! I really enjoyed Defiance; I think it was a fantastic though dark dystopia! I'm so hyped for this one to come out!
Action is always a plus for me as well :)
Rachel still is a little of a oddball I guess, a little self-centered, would you say?

    Great review Montana! :D

  4. I still need to read Defiance and I have heard nothing but amazing things about it. Too bad this one wasn't as impressive as the first though. I love that it is action-packed, and despite your concerns you could still enjoy it. I can't wait to meet Logan. He sounds like an amazing, and enjoyable character. Great review, Montana! :D
