Smart Girls Get What They Want Discussion: Prologue-Chapter 6

 Well hello all! Emily here!

I'm so excited to be a part of this read-a-long and discussion with everybody! And Montana could not have picked a better book to read. It's only been six chapters and already I'm in love with Smart Girls Get What They Want. Seriously. So without further ado, let's get the party started. (And by party, I mean intense, deep, inquisitive thoughts...so prepare yourself.)

First of all, I should point out that this is not my first Sarah Stohmeyer novel. I read How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True not that long ago and just fell in love. I mean, working at Disney World as a princess was my fantasy growing up so it was just a lot of fun and incredibly adorable. And so far I'm enjoying this book as well. A little too much actually. In fact, it nearly killed me to have to stop after chapter six; I so badly wanted to just tear through the entire thing. But I'm trying to stay on the same page as you guys (both literally and metaphorically) and so I had to hide my Nook. THE SACRIFICES I MAKE FOR YOU GUYS!! But I digress.

Usually discussions include more than one person, so instead of me gushing and fan-girling all over this blog, I'll shut up and let you guys talk. What do you think so far? We want to know. Here's some things to think about and to get the discussion going.

  • What do you think of our protagonist, Gigi? Has she been a good narrator so far? What do you like about her character? Dislike?
  • Often in the young adult genre, best friends tend to fall into very specific categories. (for example: the butt-face whyareyouevenfriends friend, the sarcastic, loyal friend, the absentee friend, etc.) Do you think Bea or Neerja fall into any cliches? And do these characters accurately portray real best friends?
  • While we're on best friends, Ava seems to be a wild card. Do you think Gigi and Ava will be able to patch up their friendship, or will she end up being an antagonist? Have you ever had a similar experience? Are best friends likely to grow apart as they grow up?
  • Ok. Please don't kill each other, but I have to ask. Will or Mike? And why?
  • Cheating seems to be a big part of this story so far, so what do you guys think constitutes cheating? Does it have to be on a test, or could sharing answers on homework be considered cheating? Is the person who lets someone cheat off of them just as guilty as the perpetrator?
  • Was the note on Mike and Gigi's permanent school records fair? (The note that says they were accused of cheating) Should schools make this a policy?
  • Mike seems to think that Gigi and her group of friends are too high above the rest of the student body, and Gigi is disappointed when it seems like nobody knows who she is. Does being smart have consequences in high school? Is it possible to be both smart and popular?
  • On that note, Gigi mentions to her mother that guys don't like smart girls...thoughts? (especially from the men because I'm curious to see what they think on this question in particular...)
  • Lastly, I was just curious to see what you guys thought about the cover change. Which cover do you like best or think most accurately portrays the story?

Ok. I realize that was an insane amount of questions. But I'm really curious to hear what you guys think so far. Pick one question, or several, or if you're really ambitious, all of them and let us know what's going on in your head! I can't wait to join in on the discussion and to continue the story.

Thanks in advance for all you're comments and conversations! I'll see you guys sometime soon!

Oh hello there! My name is Emily, though some of you may know me as the Bookie Monster. As the name would suggest, I devour books like the Cookie Monster devours cookies. In my spare time, I like to bake cookies (and devour those as well) and dream about taking over the world. As if my book obsession wasn't life consuming enough,

I work in the children's room at my local library and I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in English. It's safe to say I'm a bit of a book fanatic. I discreetly shed a few tears on my eleventh birthday when I did not receive my Hogwarts acceptance letter and I waited seven hours outside in the rain just to get a good seat at the Hunger Games midnight premiere. I'm terrified of blood and Disney movies make me cry (in a good way). My passions include hippos, hugs, and Hans Zimmer…and uh,long walks on the beach. I'm just a normal girl w
ith a slightly abnormal and frightfully expensive obsession. Nice to meet you!

  1. I had a hard time stopping after chapter 6 as well - the book flows so smooth and the story was really getting going! I really enjoy Gigi as a main character. I love that she is sensible, witty and I can definitely relate the anxiety when it comes to public speaking. I have to say I think I'm on team Will. Mike clearly has a girlfriend and though there's something appealing about him, I'm going to have to root for Will. As for the covers, I really like the one on the right better, however, I would have to say that so far in the story, the one on the left fits better with Gigi's character.

  2. I’m loving this book so far. Like you, I read How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True not that long ago, and I just love Sarah’s style. I think Gigi is a fantastic narrator; she’s got a really distinct voice, and I find myself relating to her. Plus she’s hilarious, and I love a book that makes you actually laugh out loud. I like that Bea and Neerja really seem to be there for Gigi, and I love the little anecdotes about their history together as friends. It makes it really easy to connect with them. I’m not sure about Ava…I’ve had friends like that, and it usually doesn’t end well. I have a feeling they MAY be able to work things out, but I think Ava will be a source of trouble for at least part of the book. I can’t really decide between Mike and Will…on the surface Mike seems all wrong for Gigi, but I think there’s a lot more to him, and I’m looking forward to learning more about him…and Will, too. It really was hard to stop after six chapters, but now that I’ve answered this week’s questions, I can go grab my Kindle and start reading again! ;-)

  3. I like Gigi so far, I think that she makes pretty good choices, and is a good person all around, although she occasionally makes mistakes. I can't really think of any cliches they fall under at the moment, but I am sure if I thought about it for oh about 6 months, I could come up with something :).
Mike I like (look at me rhyming!) I don't really know why I like him better, I just do. I don' t think that anything constitutes cheating, and I think that everyone who is involved is at fault in some way or another. I think that some guys like smart girls (at least I hope they do). And lastly I love the new cover, but I think that the old one is better for the story line!
    Awesome book so far!

  4. I too am terrible at stopping at the specified chapter so I apologize for any page I may read ahead XD. Anyways, Gigi, I think, is a fantastic main protagonist. Not only is she totally relatable (at least to me) but she is quirky and the author does a brilliant job at making me feel for Gigi. When something embarrassing happens to Gigi (basically every time she talks to a boy) I cringe and have to pause because I too feel embarrassed. I also like how even though she is the brainiac, she's not some awkward stereotypical nerd, she's a funny, sarcastic person with ugly pretty clothes. :p
I do think the side characters fall into those cliches, though I love both Bea and Neerja. Bea's character is written with great wit, but I feel like she is the sarcastic friend that you can't help but like. Neerja is so cute, she's just so scared and timid and head over heels for Justin I keep wanting to scream "JUST LOVE HER YOU FOOL," but yeah, I like Neerja. They both seem like the kinds of friends you would have, because besides brains they are all so different, and opposites attract.
I feel like Ava is a dead end. She may be the minor friend that Gigi occasionally talks to, but nothing more. I recently went to high school and my best friend and I went to different ones, but we made an agreement to stay in touch and I hope we don't drift apart!
Okay, this is the most important question; Mike or Will? I like Will, he's got everyone: tall, dark, handsome, a bloody Californian, but I'm Team Mike. Something about Will bugs me, like he probably has a girlfriend or something. I don't know, but right now Mike has my vote, so "No I Will not." If anyone you got that ;)

Okay, I was going to answer all the questions, but this is a good amount I think. So far this is a great book, I don't want to put it down!

  5. I can't say much about Will, there is nothing to him yet, but I'm am liking Mike's humor so far. And Gigi is fun, young and humorous. I love the prologue the best and felt so aggravated with the whole cheating scandal. Just believe they didn't cheat and go to such extreme measures. I feel sorry for Gigi's social anxiety. My friend feels that too and I just cannot imagine that feeling. Ava, I hope she becomes a friend where Gigi realizes their is more to people then meets your eye. Her fashion ways remind me a bit of Aria from Pretty Little Liars. Looking forward to what happens next!
