Smart Girls Get What They Want Discussion/Readalong: Chapters 14-20

Hey all! Ariella here :) Welcome back to the Smart Girls Get What They Want Readalong! It's the third week now and things are getting better and more intense (as intense as they can get with a contemporary; 'cause we aren't killing anyone here) with every chapter. How are y'all holding up, anyways? I already went ahead and read all of it. HOW CAN YOU HOLD YOURSELF BACK? Maybe y'all are cheating and just following along. But anyways, let's get to the questions and get all your brains into action. Emily and Sara came before me and had a great set of questions. I don't know how I'll do because I'm not really the note-taking kind of reader, if you know what I mean? My questions probably suck, but hey, my brain is kinda short-wired haha.

1. What do you think of our protagonist, Gigi, now? Your opinion of her must have changed throughout the book.

A: I personally think Gigi is okay. I don't hate but I don't love her either. I admire her for sticking with her friends but there are some choices that she could've thought more about. I like how she joins the ski team with Bea even though she couldn't ski. She's a great best friend and I admire her for that.

2. Do you think this book is an accurate portrayal of how smart girls are treated at school? Any personal experiences or insights?

A: I'm considered a "smart girl" in my class but I think this book went a bit overboard. It might because my school is small and because of that, mostly everyone knows me. I wouldn't say I'm the outcast but most people just describe me as "smart" and "that bookworm". From this, I think any smart girl would consider stepping it up and making herself known as something else other than just the smart kid.

3. Will or Mike? And what do you think about how they've acted toward Gigi so far? List your reasons about who you like 'cause I wanna know! ;)

A: I'm going for Mike. Sorry for y'all that love Will but Mike is my sweetheart! Will has always felt off to me and kind of fake while Mike is trying his hardest to help Gigi and be charming towards her. Plus, who doesn't love a cute jock who's also a nerd? *sigh* I WANT ONE MYSELF :3

4. Any thoughts on Neerja and Justin?

A: I personally don't like the pairing. I think Henry would be good for Neerja because he's sweet. Honestly, I think Justin is too shallow.

5. What do you think about how the ski race turned out? Satisfied or no?

A: I think Gigi did the best she could and just went with her gut. The ending for chapter 20 was really cute and made my heart flutter just a bit :3

That's the end of my questions! I'm sorry; it probably sucked a lot compared to Emily and Sara's but it was the best I could do. I'm not really note-taking or analytic reader :( If there are things that you want to tell me about the book that I didn't ask about, feel free to spam the comments haha :)

My name's Ariella and I'm a 14 year old Canadian girl that loves to read. Everything began with a book called the Lightning Thief and from there I was hooked. I enjoy and read all kinds of genres but my favourites are paranormal and mythology. I love reading YA books but I love Middle Grade books as well. I also blog over at Secrets of Lost Words. You can usually find me crawling on twitter so feel free to contact me!

  1. I'm also a Mike fan. Never really like Will. Completely agree that he's fake--plus, he's just a jerk off.

  2. I'm gonna have to agree with you on all the awesome points! Gigi is a great narrator, and I'm glad we get to see her side, but I am not hardcore in love with her. But I do love how she's trying to do better and make things different. It's admirable. :D

We might have a bit of a war on our hands because I am totally MIKE ALL THE FREAKING WAY. Love his personality yes!! Will was too predictable as a character. The swoony new hot guy. Puh-leeze. And then he's a jerk thinking he can just come right back and be all "I'm falling for you Gigi. You wouldn't want to crush my heart and rip that smile off my pathetically gorgeous face now would you?" Just no.

And yes for Neerja and Henry! I've totally rooted for them all along! I just hope Bea can find a guy! I love her, and would had to have her stuck on the sidelines of all these pretty cute romances. Been there, done that, it sucks. Maybe B.K.? Lol.

I'm glad that Gigi wasn't a totally flop the whole time. I'm so glad you gave it her best until of course she did flop out. I think if she hadn't I would have been a lot more disliking of her. and yes! Mike!! I am so glad it's finally coming together. Eep. It just makes me happy.

With those comments, I love dis book! I'm gonna go finish it now!!

  3. I don't think that Gigi is in my list for top favorite character but she is not on the bottom either.
I have loved Mike this whole time.....and I am not changing my view on him any time soon!
Bookworms tend to be thought as nerdish and awkward, yet I know a lot of people who read constantly but still have a very active social life. Great questions Ariella!

  4. Yes to the cute jock who also happens to be a nerd! I think Mike would most definitely be my choice as well. *double sigh* My high school was really small as well, so we didn't really the "popular" crowd and the "smart" crowd, everyone co mingled pretty well, but it's always fun for me to read about high schools that were nothing like mine! I need to check this book out:)

  5. I like Gigi even more now. She's so brave and is such a good friend. I also find her relatable and that makes her one of the best main protagonist girls I've read yet.
I agree with you saying this book went a bit overboard on how smart girls are treated, but I believe it is pretty accurate otherwise. People tend to be jealous and therefore ignore the smart because I don't know if they feel inferior or what, but I think its true. I was considered as one of the smart, bookworms in middle school, and I had friends and such, but the smarter people were kind of thought of as annoying as they'd shout out every answer or whatever.
MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEE!! and if you didn't catch that MIKE! Will doesn't hold a shoe to Mike. Not only is Mike so so so so swoon worthy, but he's kind, beautiful, athletic, cuddled Gigi, and he reads poetry!! Sure, Will is handsome and rich, but no, just no.
Neerja needs to dump Justin and leap into Henry's arms because they are PUUURFECT together :D
I like how the ski scene turned out. Of course I wanted Gigi to go beast mode and win the race, but that wouldn't have been nearly as good as her wiping out and Mike swooping in and making us swoon.

    Brilliant Questions and Brilliant Book!!!!!!!

  6. I really like Gigi. She’s the kind of friend I’d want to have - loyal, always there for you, always supportive.
I think it’s fairly accurate. I was a ‘smart girl’ in school and because I was quiet and shy, a lot of people didn’t know who I was. I had my core group of friends and I had acquaintances, but I was very similar to Gigi in that I’d rather hang out with my small group of friends than be in the cafeteria or trying to meet new people.
I like Mike. Right from the beginning I could tell there was something kind of *off* about Will like maybe he was just pretending to be a great guy but would actually turn out to be a jerk. I wasn’t 100% sure about Mike in the beginning either but he’s slowly proven himself.
Ugh, Justin. I just want to smack him upside the head. He’s so shallow and superficial and just plain dumb. Neerja deserves so much better…like a guy who will actually PAY ATTENTION TO HER.
I thought Gigi rocked the race. She did the best she could and she had way more guts than I would…you wouldn’t find me in a ski race, even for my best friend!

PS - I’m Canadian too. And don't worry about your questions, they were great - I'm not really an analytical, note-taking reader either, so you're not alone! ;-)

  7. The more I read, the more I like Gigi. She's a great role model and a great friend. She's honest to herself and those around her, she's trustworthy, loyal, confident (for the most part) and she has a great attitude. I was impressed that she stood up for herself against the boys that she likes, and she did in fact choose her friend over the boy when it came to the dance - I was so proud of Gigi for staying true to Bea.
I like both of the boys, though I think I like Mike a tad, tiny bit more. Gigi describes Will as gorgeous, but it seems that's about all she's attracted to about him, outside of a few other surface qualities, such as skiing and smooth talking. I think that Mike is more laid back, witty and a genuine nice guy - and as a fellow book lover, I have to love the fact that he loves books and was caught buying a huge stack of books.
I'm torn when it comes to Neerja and Justin. They seemed so sweet together and it's something that Neerja had always wanted. I don't think that Justin has necessarily done something to deserve to be thrown aside. I think that it was bad of him to go around talking about what they do (or rather, haven't yet done) in their private time, but then again, it seems that talking about that stuff around guys is a common theme. Do I think he should be doing that? Absolutely not. Do I think it means they should break up? Eh, not really. They don't have much in common but I think that sometimes opposites attract. I'm not sure what she should do, but if she's not feeling it with him and it seems the crush is starting to wear off, then she should end it. I see a lot of people are talking about Neerja and Henry - I never thought about them together, I think I've been completely oblivious to their feelings toward each other. But I do love Henry and I think he deserves a great girl and Neerja would fit right in.
I thought Gigi did great at the race. She did her best and when she let go and just let herself be in the moment she was doing her best.
Great questions! Looking forward to finishing this book up - I have to know what's going to happen and who is going to end up with who!

  8. Hey! So sorry for participating in the discussions! School has been crazy!

    1. I tthink Gigi is ok. I'm still trying to figure out who she will end up with but I think she's kind of annoying moping around over Will.

    2. I honestly have no idea because I've been homeschooled my whole life (I'm actually in early college now). I can say from my early college experience with other high schoolers my age is the smart people are accepted. Now, if you're really smart but also really creepy and weird than yeah, that's going to be an issue (yes that happened in my area) but for the most part I think the book kind of exaggerates.

    3. I am completely Team Mike! I can proudly say that I was never for a second Team Will. He is a shallow, stuck-up rich boy who keeps leading Gigi on. Just no. Mike, on the other hand, is cool. He's secretly smart, really sweet, and supports Gigi.

    4. I don't like Justin he's a jerk. Team Henry for the win!

    5. Let me start out by saying that the whole skiing part of this book is probably not very close to reality. If you can't ski, you should NOT join the ski team and almost die every single time you go down a cliff. So I don't really think the race was very realistic. But that's just me :)

    1. LOL I agree with you on your answer to #5. I really don't think that a beginner can make it down the black diamond slope. I'm a beginner (a non-athletic one at that) and I can barely make it down the bunny hill unscathed. Yep, my experiences for laughs :D

Hi! Thank you so much for commenting, I read each and every comment and love reading them :) Also, I'll comment back as soon as I can. Happy Reading!
