Sylo by D.J. MacHale Book Review

SYLO (The SYLO Chronicles, #1)Does Tucker Pierce have what it takes to be a hero when the U.S. military quarantines his island?

Fourteen-year-old Tucker Pierce prefers to fly under the radar. He’s used to navigating around summer tourists in his hometown on idyllic Pemberwick Island, Maine. He’s content to sit on the sidelines as a backup player on the high school football team. And though his best friend Quinn tells him to “go for it,” he’s too chicken to ask Tori Sleeper on a date. There’s always tomorrow, he figures. Then Pemberwick Island is invaded by a mysterious branch of the U.S. military called SYLO. And sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option for Tucker, because tomorrow may never come.

It’s up to Tucker, Quinn, and Tori to uncover the truth about the singing aircraft that appears only at night—and the stranger named Feit who’s pushing a red crystal he calls the Ruby that brings unique powers to all who take it. Tucker and his friends must rescue not just Pemberwick Island, but the fate of the world—and all before tomorrow is too late.

#1 New York Times bestselling author D.J. MacHale brings his brilliant plotting and breathless pacing to SYLO, the first in this ultimate end-of-the-world adventure trilogy.

Sylo is about Tucker and his friends who see a strange explosion the night of the first death. And then the next thing they know, they're up to their necks in secrets, confusion, and strange events. It's definitely not what you would expect on a Pemberwick Island.

It's a real interesting book. I did not see the ending coming until right before/at the ending. Once I got into the book I couldn't put it down and I got really sucked in...because it gets so confusing that you don't know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. It definitely has a great science fiction and dystopia feel to it but it's some sort of in between the two. And I cannot wait to see what will happen because I honestly don't know what to expect. You just get deeper and deeper, farther and farther away from what you knew.

Nice job on the world-building and plot. I liked the characters well enough and the three all together were just great! And the way Tori had this sort of metaphor or something going on with the whole crab/lemon/smell/distaste/hiding thing going on? Loved that. And I know, confusing ;) Just like this book.Tucker was likable enough and was a good guy as was Quinn. And the general dude was perfect.

I liked the Pendragon series more I have to admit. And it took me a few chapters to get into what was happening and get excited with the characters. While it wasn't shockingly amazing it was really enticing once it got going with the story. Basically when the invasion comes. So I did enjoy this one a lot although I didn't LOVE it I certainly LIKED it a lot :)

Basically...if you like science fiction, fantasy, or apocalyptic then you should pick up this book. Liked the author's other books? Pick it up. It's pretty good and it will most definitely leave you wanting more!

Girly For LifeSara Bennett happens to be a slightly crazy girl. A slightly nerdy girl. A slightly strange girl who likes being that way.  A slightly obsessed girl when it comes to things she loves. A girl who cries when reading books. A girl who desperately wants her own personal library. A girl who is a total bookworm. A girl who would rather read than watch reality tv. A girl who wants to be an author someday. A girl who loves her Savior. And a girl who just loves to read.

    1. I agree, there was definitely more of a "guy feel" to this book and with his others as well, but I could still deal with it just fine ;) I can handle a few explosions away from my contemporary romance haha. Glad you liked it!
