I'm not going to lie. I was expecting the worst when I picked up this book. There have been some pretty harsh reviews of Amelia Kahaney's debut novel floating around the blogosphere lately. It may be due to my extremely low expectations to start out with, but this book was not as bad as I had heard. I know that I have a tendency to say only good things about novels, but I really believe this book does not deserve the bad reputation it's picked up.

Ok. Yes, the romance was lacking. Actually, at the beginning of the novel, I could not even begin to understand why Anthem was going through so much trouble for a guy she had met, what, like a week ago? They dance once, he paints a picture of her and suddenly he's worth dying for? Anthem's psycho ex-boyfriend has more character depth than Gavin. But then you begin to realize that there is much more going on underneath the surface of the romance than the author originally lets on. The romance still was not my favorite part of the book, but if at first you think you might throw the book across the room in response to Gavin and Anthem's whirlwind romance, hang on! I promise it gets at least slightly better.

Ok. Yes, the plot was the predictable. I swear I saw the huge twist coming from miles away. Predictability does not, however, diminish the plot in any way. And you have to admit, this is a pretty cool story line. I love a good superhero story and there's just not enough of this genre in young adult literature to go around. Anthem gets some superpowers and decides to kick some butt and take back her city. I like it!

Perhaps the reason so many people were disappointed when they read this book was because the idea is so awesome and it's not really used to its full potential. The book is good, but you can tell that it's a debut novel. It's a very simple book, which means it's not for everybody. However, I read the book in less than a day. Writing, just like any other profession or activity really, is a learning process and I hope that Amelia Kahaney will takes these reviews to heart and blow us away with the next novel in the series.

I'm sorry I seem rather back and forth in this review. But that's how I feel after reading this book. I can't decide what I think! But in this case, I'm going to give the book the benefit of the doubt because I love superheroes and I think this series could be so much more than it has started out to be. And I hope it will be.

Oh hello there! My name is Emily, though some of you may know me as the Bookie Monster. As the name would suggest, I devour books like the Cookie Monster devours cookies. In my spare time, I like to bake cookies (and devour those as well) and dream about taking over the world. As if my book obsession wasn't life consuming enough,

I work in the children's room at my local library and I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in English. It's safe to say I'm a bit of a book fanatic. I discreetly shed a few tears on my eleventh birthday when I did not receive my Hogwarts acceptance letter and I waited seven hours outside in the rain just to get a good seat at the Hunger Games midnight premiere. I'm terrified of blood and Disney movies make me cry (in a good way). My passions include hippos, hugs, and Hans Zimmer…and uh,long walks on the beach. I'm just a normal girl w
ith a slightly abnormal and frightfully expensive obsession. Nice to meet you!

  1. Oh, I do like the cover for this book. But so disappointed in bad romance. Sigh. So I won't be reading this book. But I'm glad you didn't fully hate it :) Thank you for sharing. <3

  2. I'm glad that you're not one of those people who gave this book only 1 star! You're right, this synopsis for this book sounds really awesome, and it's unfortunate that it doesn't live up to it's full potential like it could. It's a shame that the romance didn't go well because it's the brokenHEARTED. I'm looking forward to seeing what I think, thanks for your honest thoughts!

  3. This is the first I've heard of this book, but it does sound interesting. It's a shame that the book doesn't meet it's potential, but as you said, writing is a learning process, and I'm sure the author will only continue to push her talents further.

  4. I've thought about reading this book but hesitated because of the bad reviews. I'm not really into the superhero stuff, but I'll give it a shot!
