Unbreakable by Kami Garcia Book Review

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.
Unbreakable (The Legion, #1)
When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous s
pirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.
Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.
Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

I wasn’t planning on reading Unbreakable anytime soon, until all these great reviews started popping up, comparing it to Supernatural. I haven’t actually ever seen the show, but I’ve heard it’s amazing. Unbreakable was a great start to a new paranormal series!

The book starts with Kennedy living a pretty normal life, until an angry spirit tries to kill her. From that point on, it was almost nonstop action, especially with the arrival of two really cute twin brothers. The action in this book was definitely my favorite part. Kennedy goes with the brothers, along with two other characters, to find the missing pieces of a puzzle that will prevent a demon from basically destroying the world. There were so many twists and turns and although the premise is kind of creepy, the book definitely never got too scary (at least for me).

I was somewhat indifferent towards Kennedy, mainly because I felt the book was more centered around the action than the characters. She was still an okay character, but I liked the side character’s personalities, especially Alara's personality, a lot more. There is a love triangle, but it’s pretty obvious which guy she prefers. Lukas was the more friendly brother, while Jared was more of the opposite. I personally preferred Jared and I thought he was a sweet guy ;)

I didn’t like the ending, but it does make me more excited to read the next book. I have my own theory regarding what happened and I’m hoping my theory is right. Unbreakable is a book I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys paranormal books, and I’d give it 3 1/2 out of 5 flowers :)

  1. I've seen reviews for this one everywhere, and yeah, it does sound a lot like the TV show. It sounds like something I'd be into, but for some reason I just keep passing over it in favor of other books. Maaybe someday!

  2. I actually don't think I've read a single review for this one! I just didn't click on them--but I've seen a lot of Paranormal comparisons as well, though I'm like you and have never seen the show. I'm glad to hear you liked it, though, so I think I'll have to pick it up soon. :) Great review!!

  6. I thought I was the only one who had yet to see Supernatural! This was one I hadn't planned on picking up either, but I am glad you enjoyed it. The pacing sounds pretty good but the MC seems a bit iffy, like she could be frustrating.
