Unhinged by A.G Howard Book Review

Unhinged (Splintered, #2)Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.
That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.
As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.
If Alyssa stays in the hu
man realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

Splintered was one of the best and most unique retellings I read in 2013, so I had high hopes for the sequel. Unhinged didn’t disappoint and the world was just as amazing as ever.

Although most of Unhinged takes place in the human realm, not Wonderland, all the atmospheric elements from Wonderland were so unique and intriguing. I love how A.G Howard slightly twisted the original story and I thought some references to the Jabberwocky were especially cool.

I didn’t like Morpheus at all in Splintered, and I felt like he was a manipulative, uncaring jerk. My feelings on him remained unchanged throughout the first half of the novel, but my opinion slowly started to change in the second half. His intentions behind his actions were made more clear and I loved the new side you were able to see of him. I still love Jeb, but my opinion of him definitely changed slightly. I didn’t love him quite as much as I loved him in the last book. I’m now so torn about who I think Alyssa should choose.

Regarding Alyssa, she grew so much from the previous book. She had made the decision to turn her back on her Wonderland heritage, but is starting to realize that it’s not that easy to forget that side of her, especially considering Morpheus is constantly hanging around. The Wonderland, or netherling side, is the slightly darker part, and Alyssa almost surrenders to it more than once. I was torn about what I wanted to do, since Wonderland was still technically part of her.

Unhinged was a phenomenal sequel, with an amazing atmosphere and better characters. The first half of the book moved slightly slow, but the second half was action-packed and so much more fast-paced. I’d give Unhinged 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers. I’m so excited to see what will happen in the final book!

  2. I didn't have a great time reading Splintered at all and that's mostly because of the love triangle. Like you, I think I can see myself having a tough time between the two boys in Alyssa's life. My problem with the first book was the world in itself but since this one was in the human world, I might just give it another try.

    Thanks for sharing, Montana!

  6. I love Alice in Wonderland so I'd probably really enjoy this series, and I'll definitely be checking it out! I'm glad the sequel was good as it's always such a shame when sequels don't live up to the standards of their predecessors. Great review!

  7. MONTANA!!! I am starting Splintered today and I can't wait! I have heard nothing but amazing things about it. Plus, the covers are gorgeous! I can't wait to meet Jeb and Morpheus. And I'm glad to hear that this was a worthy re-telling. Re-tellings don't always go as planned, but Im looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Glad you enjoyed this and the sequel lived up to your expectations. Fabulous review! :D

  10. I've been wanting to read this series for a long time now. The only thing stopping me is the love triangle. I've had enough of those lately and it usually tends to ruin my reading experience. This sounds like it was a strong sequel though and I love it when a character grows throughout a series. I also love the sound of the world. Hopefully, I'll manage to get over my fear of love triangles and try this one out.
    Lovely review, Montana!
