Ask Again Later by Liz Czukas Blog Tour Stop

Liz Czukas' new book, Ask Again Later, sounds both adorable and hilarious, and I'm so happy that I had the chance to interview her!
Ask Again Later
Despite what her name might suggest, Heart has zero interest in complicated romance. So when her brilliant plan to go to prom with a group of friends is disrupted by two surprise
invites, Heart knows there's only one drama-free solution: flip a coin.
Heads: The jock. He might spend all night staring at his ex or throw up in the limo, but how bad can her brother's best friend really be?
Tails: The theater geek...with a secret. What could be better than a guy who shares all Heart's interests--even if he wants to share all his feelings?
Heart's simple coin flip has somehow given her the chance to live out both dates. But where her prom night ends up might be the most surprising thing of all...

Was your high school prom as crazy as the one in Ask Again Later? ;)

Not at all!  I went to two proms.  One when I was a sophomore at my boyfriend's school, and one at my school when I was a junior.  We had a lot of fun both times.  The craziest thing I can remember doing is eating dinner with our hands.  My school served dinner at the ballroom, and everyone at our table refused to use our forks except one girl.  She was one of my best friends and she thought we were all nuts for eating mashed potatoes with our fingers. We thought it was hilarious, though.

How did you think up the names of the characters in your novel?

The name Heart came from the last name of an illustrator in one of my son's picture books.  It was spelled Hart, and at first I was thinking that would be an interesting first name, but I realized everyone would probably think it was spelled Heart when they heard it.  The rest, as they say, is history.  Some of my characters are named after friends of mine, others just seemed to fit.  I try to pick names that won't get confused with other characters.  I hate it when I'm reading a book and too many names are similar, like Katelyn and Kathleen.  How are you supposed to keep them straight at first?

What are you currently working on writing?

My second book comes out with HarperTeen in December. It's called Top Ten Clues You're Clueless, and I think it's going to appeal to people who like Ask Again Later.  I've also got a New Adult book coming out, probably in early 2015, but I can't give you an official date or even a title!  But for now, I'm working on another YA contemporary that I'm really excited about.

If you could have lunch with any other author (dead or alive), who would it be?

Only one?  Oh gosh, that's tough.  Stephen King?  Although I think it would be epic to sit across a table from Maureen Johnson and have her stare at me.

For Ask Again Later, since the chapters alternate between two different realities, did you write the “Heads” perspective all at once and then the “Tails” perspective or did you switch off writing the chapters just as they appear in the book?

I tried writing them alternating at first, but it was too confusing! I ended up writing the "Heads" story first and the "Tails" after that, although when I got close to the end, I bounced back and forth a bit between them.

What advice would you give an aspiring author?
Write!  I know, so obvious, but it's true.  There are a lot of people in the world who say they'd like to write a book, but never get down to it.  If you've got a story in your head, what's the harm in putting your fingers to the keyboard and making it happen?  It's not like there's anyone standing over your shoulder, criticizing you as you write.  It's up to you if and when you decide to share it!  Be fearless.
And learn the difference between its and it's.  You'll thank me.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Ingest stories in every form!  I love to read, love great TV shows like Walking Dead, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Psych, New Girl...someone stop me!  I also love movies, board games, and Candy Crush.  In short, I prefer the sedentary life.

Quick Questions:

Summer or Winter?

Ice Cream or Yogurt?
If I have to pick, ice cream, but I'd rather have a cookie, please.

Physical Copy or E-Book?
Both!  Also audiobooks!

Mystery or Sci-Fi?
Ooh, tough one.  Sci-Fi, I guess.  But the real answer is both, plus all the other genres too!
