Divergent Movie Review

This is my first movie review, since I don’t usually do them, but Divergent is something I’ve been dying to talk about! I personally found it to be an amazing book to movie adaption and I’m already excited for Insurgent. I’d love to hear your opinion about it and this post will probably be the first and the last time I use GIFS :p

First off, the setting for the movie was amazing. I loved how the dystopian Chicago looked and it was exactly how I pictured it to be while reading the book. The faction system was well explained, too, something I thought was helpful for people who hadn’t yet read the book.

My favorite part of the movie has to be the characters, and the actors who played them. I liked Divergent (the novel), but due to me not liking Tris that much, it kept Divergent from being a favorite of mine. I just found Tris to be kind of cold and not relatable in the novels. However, Shailene Woodley really brought Tris to life and she was so much more likable to me in the movie. I was rooting for her the entire time and I admired her so much more, especially in that jumping off the edge scene.

My favorite character was definitely Four, played by Theo James, my new favorite actor ;) He’s definitely insanely attractive, but not only that, it was so obvious how much he cared about Tris. The scene involving his fears was so heartbreaking to watch, but I loved how you watched his and Tris’ relationship grow over the course of the movie.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat and I feel like they did a great job fitting all the major events in the novel into a 2 1/2 hour movie. Granted, it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I feel like they kept the movie pretty loyal to the book.

The friend I saw it with said she loved the romance, but found the movie to be very sad. While I was already expectant of certain things, I can definitely understand why people would feel that way. What did you think of the movie? I’d love to hear other opinions on it :) I’d highly recommend it and give it 4.5 out of 5 flowers.

  2. I found the movie to be PERFECT. You are totally right about Shailene Woodley! I did love Tris in the books, and partly because of why maybe you found her cold. I envied her ability to separate her emotions from what she needed to do and how she was always in control of how she felt. What I love that Shailene did for her character was she SHOWED us her emotions where as when we are reading the book we can't see her from the outside really since she is the one narrating. Every time she was about to do something dangerous Shailene would do this little nervous laugh and smile like 'this is crazy!' and I LOVED IT, like loved it so much. She brought SO much life and dimension to Tris. Ahhhh I also love Shailene Woodley in general, so I mean, so excited for her. Four was awesome.. seemed even stronger in the movie than the books. The special effects and the landscape was just, amazing. I am so proud of this little book. For so many years it felt like I was the only person obsessed with it and I had to imagine everything in my head and then the movies comes and BLOWS ME AWAY like it looks so much better than I imagined haha I would give it 5 out of 5. My only complaint was that they didn't show the shitty side of Christina because I hated her in the books except at the very end but I totally understand that they don't have time to go down every single plot line. Maybe it's best that we like her before she's a total bitch to Tris in Insurgent anyway.

    1. I haven't seen anything with Shailene Woodley before, but she did such an awesome job as Tris. I liked Four a lot better in the movie than I did in the book, too ;)

  4. I honestly couldn't find fault in this movie. I loved it that much! Soon after I watched it the second time around, I so want to watch it again. Theo James was fantastic! And so was Shai. I can't believe how perfect they are for the roles! This is probably one of those rare instances when I definitely loved the movie more than the book.

    Great first try! :)

    1. I've watched it twice, too, although this review was from the first time I saw it. It's so entertaining and I agree with you about this being one of the few instances where I love the movie more than the book :)

  6. I totally agree! It was such a great adaption of the book because they didn't leave anything important out. And some of my friends were in tears by the end, especially the ones who had no idea what was coming. Theo James was brilliant in the film too. Because of him, I'm more in love with Four now than I was before. I can't wait for Insurgent!

  8. I loved it too! I think my favourite part (beyond swooning over Theo James!!!!) was getting a visual of the factions. I guess I'm not very much of a visual reader so seeing this world, especially since the world building was great, was so nice. I especially adored the clothes. I'm so fascinated with Erudie so seeing Jeanine Matthews (and her fantastic blue coat!) was too cool. I thought they did a good job of really developing the story emotionally, although the last part could have started a little earlier.

I'm not sure if I'll like seeing Insurgent because I thought the story in that was just okay (don't even ask me about Allegiant) but I guess the movie has restored my faith in the franchise, so I guess I'll go watch Insurgent at least.

    1. The factions looked so cool and they were pretty close to how I imagined they would be from the book. I've only read Divergent and been spoiled for Allegiant, so I'm probably not going to finish the series. I'm still planning to keep with the movies, though :)

  10. Yes! I loved it as well. Especially how Tris's character was portrayed in the movie. There wasn't anything different in the things she did, but Shaileine Woodley made me want to like her. Does that make sense? It's almost as if she brought new life to the character and it was just really goo.d
