Open Road Summer by Emery Lord Book Review

Open Road SummerAfter breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

I'm so conflicted over Open Road Summer. I’m a huge fan of contemporary (something I feel like I’ve made very clear by now :p), and this was definitely one of my most anticipated releases for April, if not for the whole year. With all the amazing praise, too, I was hoping for this book to be one of my favorites of the year. Although I didn’t enjoy the first half of the book very much, I ended up really enjoying the novel for the most part!

For the first half, I was just kind of bored and I really didn’t like the main character Reagan. I felt like she didn’t make the best choices, but rather than learn from them, came off almost whiny and standoffish about them. Throughout the book, she also seemed hypocritical and judgmental. Those are a ton of harsh words, but she really did become better over the course of the book. Although she still wasn’t my favorite, I feel like I grew to understand her much better.

The writing also took me a bit to get used to, but it’s a really pretty writing style. The scenery in each city they travel to was very well depicted and I loved the inside look at fame through Reagan’s friendship with her best friend, Dee. They were an amazing pair of friends. My favorite part of the book, though, was definitely Matt Finch.

I heard so much about him before I even started the novel, and he was even better than I expected him to be. He’s hilarious, sweet, and performs the most amazing gestures- basically my the perfect guy. His determination when it came to Reagan was great, but I feel like she didn’t necessarily deserve him. However, I loved how different she was once she was around him.

Also, can we just talk about the songs for a second? I love when authors include songs in their books (like in Maybe Someday), and this was no different. They all had the most incredible, beautiful lyrics. I could easily picture them being actual songs today.

The ending was phenomenal and I think that it contained so many good, inspirational messages. I walked away extremely happy and satisfied from reading this book. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be reading anything else the author (Emery Lord) writes. I initially planned to give this 4 out of 5 when I finished reading it, but due to me not liking the beginning so much, I feel like 3.5 out of 5 is a more accurate rating. Overall, it’s still a really great read :)

  1. I have seen so many great reviews for this one I had to add it to my TBR pile, I am happy to see another great review. Thanks for the warning about the beginning being a little rough for you, I will make sure and keep that in mind when starting this one.

  2. Great review. I'm with you on this one. I was really excited to read it too, but I was kind of disappointed because I really didn't like Reagan. Can we just admit that she was kind of a b----? I really liked Dee, she was my favorite. As much as I loved Matt, I wish I had more of him. I loved the music aspect too!

    1. Reagan was pretty unlikable, and I agree with you that Dee was awesome! The music was so cool and I'm starting to really love books with musical aspects.

  3. I felt the same way. I didn't like Reagan at first, and though I grew to like her more as the story progressed, I'm not the number one fan of the "I heart Reagan fan club". I think what made me like this book is Matt Finch. I felt like I was falling in love with him myself. Butterflies and all.

  5. Sorry you didn't like it as much, Montana. It's one of my favourites this year, but I thought Reagan showed great restraints when she was faced with choices. Kind of like, what would the old Reagan do vs the new and improved one.

I hope you'll have better luck on your next read. :)

    1. That's a very interesting point. I think the thing that was most frustrating to me about her was how hypocritical she could be. Thank you, Joy :)

  6. That is too bad that you didn't like the beginning of this story. I'm so glad that the ending of the book was better than the start. I really want to read some more contemporary books for this summer so I will look into getting this from the library.

    Thanks for the great review!

I've noticed that a lot of April releases ended up as "meh" reads. :(((
