I’m kind of in awe about The Art of Lainey right now. I’m a huge fan of Venom, and was excited to see how Paula Stokes would write a contemporary. The Art of Lainey is such a great coming-of-age story and I totally love Micah <3

The Art of Lainey is about how Lainey uses The Art of War to try and win back her boyfriend, who recently broke up with her. She enlists the help of Micah, a punk rocker who she doesn’t know very well. Over the course of the book, she realizes more about who she truly is.

I, for whatever reason, love the idea of girls trying to win back/get revenge on their ex-boyfriends, and Lainey’s story was just as entertaining as I expected it to be. She wasn’t the most likable character at all first, but I think that was probably intentional so you would fully see how much she grew over the course of the book. She was a shallow, insecure character at first, but overtime you realized her motivation behind both her actions and emotions. I thought all the friendships and relationships she had in her life were completely realistic to high school, too. She’s trying to find out what she wants to do after high school and over time, I began to realize why was so hung up on Jason. I feel like she did finally make the right choices regarding everything and the ending was great (although I wouldn’t mind reading another book in this series..or two ;)

Micah is one of those guys who deserves his entire paragraph. He was amazing and I loved how Lainey and him didn’t initially seem to be a good match or have anything in common. He ended up helping her try to win back Jason, her ex-boyfriend, and the scenes where they interacted were just so cute! They’re hilarious together and the whole book has several funny moments.

I think that The Art of Lainey was a more mature YA, but it still was a lighter read. I read this almost entirely in one sitting and really didn’t want to put it down. I already think that Paula Stokes is one of my new favorite contemporary authors and I’m hoping she’ll continue on writing more. I’d give The Art of Lainey 4 1/2 out of 5 flowers. I’d definitely recommend picking this one up.

  1. I still find this book weird. I mean I have heard a lot about it but I'm not read sure about using war tactic to win back boyfriend. It seems weird to me. I guess I need to read this book and maybe I'll change my mind. Great review, Montana :)
