Emily Takes Over the Blog! (Part 1)

This title might be a little misleading considering I will be in Japan by the time this post actually goes live, but no matter. I'm here to fill in for Montana while she's enjoying the wonderful thing that is ALA and you're going to like it!

Like I said, I will happily be getting off of a 12 hour flight by now and hopefully finding the nearest place to get sushi and ramen noodles. I'm so excited to have an opportunity to visit Japan and I thought I would spend the day suggesting a couple of books and other things you should definitely check out so that you too can experience just how awesome Japan and other Asian cultures can be.

1. The Books

There are many good novels and series that feature either strong, Asian characters or are heavily influenced by Asian cultures. But even so, there still are not nearly enough. Show your love for diversity in YA by picking up one of these amazing books today. I would recommend any and all of the following….

Just so we're clear, any of the sequels to these novels also fall under this category. (In case there was any confusion there) There are many more out there, you just have to look for them, but these can't get you started!

2. Manga/Anime

Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were my childhood. Seriously. (Pokemon is now on Netflix by the way. Alleluia!)  But that's just the start. There are so many manga series out there, it's a little difficult to know where to start. These are some of my favorites, but just know that no matter what your tastes are, there's a manga that you'll love. It's true.

Just a few of my favorites to get you started. As far as anime goes, once again, there are so many to choose from. Right now, I'm hooked on Attack on Titan right now, but there are many other good ones out there. I would be happy to recommend more manga/anime based on personal preferences down in the comments section if you want more or better suggestions. It just might not happen till July 3rd when I get back.

3. Studio Ghibli

Spirited Away. Enough said. If you have not watched this movie or Howl's Moving Castle or Kiki's Delivery Service or any of these other wonderful movies, look them up right now. I MEAN IT!!

4. K-Pop

Dear God. I have no idea how I got started on K-Pop, but it has taken over my life. You've probably seen/heard of Gangam Style, but that's just a tiny peek into this huge industry. I don't even know how to describe it. You just need to watch it and start getting hooked. These are some of my favorites. Observe.

This one's a little creepy and gross by the way…but you should watch it anyway.

I've just barely scratched the surface. There are so many more groups, it's unbelievable. Once again, feel free to ask for more suggestions. I would be more than happy to give them.

Ok. I'm going to stop now before my head explodes from all this awesomeness. I would introduce the concept of dramas, but I don't want you to put off anything important you need to do for the rest of your life just so you can watch all these shows…which you would if you watched a couple of them. Believe me.
So I won't…unless you ask very nicely.

That's all for me today. Tune in tomorrow for more exciting things to come. This has been co-blogger Emily reporting from Japan. Over and out.

Oh hello there! My name is Emily, though some of you may know me as the Bookie Monster. As the name would suggest, I devour books like the Cookie Monster devours cookies. In my spare time, I like to bake cookies (and devour those as well) and dream about taking over the world. As if my book obsession wasn't life consuming enough,

I work in the children's room at my local library and I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in English. It's safe to say I'm a bit of a book fanatic. I discreetly shed a few tears on my eleventh birthday when I did not receive my Hogwarts acceptance letter and I waited seven hours outside in the rain just to get a good seat at the Hunger Games midnight premiere. I'm terrified of blood and Disney movies make me cry (in a good way). My passions include hippos, hugs, and Hans Zimmer…and uh,long walks on the beach. I'm just a normal girl w
ith a slightly abnormal and frightfully expensive obsession. Nice to meet you!

  1. Thanks for the recommendations!! I'd love to go to Japan, you are so lucky! When I was young I used to spend my afternoons reading manga or watching anime. Also watched the movies Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle :) But I haven't explored the books....
