Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson Book Review

Following on the heels of Sanderson’s successful launch into the YA market with the New York Times bestselling Rithmatist comes Mistborn, now repackaged for the teen audience.
Once, a hero rose to save the world. He failed.
For a thousand years since, the world has been a wasteland of ash and mist ruled by the immortal emperor known as the Lord Ruler. Every revolt has failed miserably.
Yet somehow, hope survives. Hope that dares to dream of ending the empire and defeating the Lord Ruler. A new kind of uprising is being planned—one that depends on the cunning of a brilliant criminal mastermind and the determination of an unlikely heroine: a teenage street urchin named Vin.
Once, a hero rose to save the world and failed. This time, can a young heroine succeed?

WOW. Words cannot describe how I feel for Mistborn so I've been putting off writing this review for a while. I figured it's time to get down to it and get it over with. I'm going to try and fangirl give this book the proper review it deserves.

I knew that this book would be awesome before I even read the first page. I mean, c'mon, it's a Brandon Sanderson novel. Of course it'd be amazing. I just didn't expect it to blow my mind away (and I'm glad it did!). Mistborn is a fantasy novel about a tyrannical leader ruling a kingdom and a group of rebels rising up against it. The story is mostly told in Vin's point of view, but in the beginning, it was told in Kelsier's point of view. The things about Allomancers, Keepers, and Mistborns are all so intriguing that it kept me turning the pages. There were kickass battle scenes but there were also mysterious political scenes where Vin had to infiltrate the nobility to gather information.

My favourite character (besides Kelsier and Vin) is Lord Elend Venture. He's the love interest in this novel. The romance doesn't really take up much of the novel, but it's there enough for you to just love it. Elend is different from the normal noblemen. He likes reading and finding out things for himself instead of believing the information that he is told by others. He had to discover with whom his loyalties lies with: the noble or the skaa (the slaves; also Vin and Kelsier)?

I also found a lot of passages that I liked in this book. With books, I usually either sticky note nothing, a few things, or just about everything. For this book, I went with the last option because it's just that freaking impressive! It has made me question some of my worldviews and I know that I'll remember some of these quotes for a long time. And if I ever forget, I'll just grab my book and look through all the sticky notes.

There were also quotes at the beginning of the book. They are little phrases from the Lord Ruler's logbook before he became Lord Ruler. Those are very interesting tidbits that add those extra details to the story.

To end on a sweet note, the ending was bitter but perfect. What a great way to tie off the book. It left me with happy feelings and now I can't wait to read the next book!

My name's Ariella and I'm a 15 year old Canadian girl that loves to read. Everything began with a book called the Lightning Thief and from there I was hooked. I enjoy and read all kinds of genres but my favourites are paranormal and mythology. I love reading YA books but I love Middle Grade books as well. I also blog over at Secrets of Lost Words. You can usually find me crawling on twitter so feel free to contact me!

  1. Okay I know for sure now after reading your review that this will be a good for my daughter. She is going to love it and I have a feeling I will as well!
    Great review!

  2. Sounds awesome. I haven't read anything by this author yet, but I DO want too.

  3. Yay I'm glad that you loved this one. I have a copy of this that I wanted to read a few months back but because of the size of this one I keep pushing it off. I'll just have to take that plunge and dive in.
    Thanks for the great review!

  4. Ok so I LOVED reading your thoughts about Mistborn, one of my favorite books EVER ♥ I actually tried to drag the series out big time - cause I don't want it to end - so I'm only reading the third book right now. BUT my love for the first book knows no bounds! The characters are impossible not to fall in love with (Vin, Kelsier and YES Elend!), the world-building is mind-blowing, the magical system? Amazing! I was hooked from the first pages too and this one was actually my very first Sanderson book. Made me a life-long fan, to be sure :D Awesome review ^^ can't wait to see what you think of the next book already!!
